General urgent GP

Suitable for urgent care

  • Acute problems needing same-day review
  • Medication issues and short scripts for acute illness
  • Post-hospital or post-ED follow-up you can't get with your usual GP today

Go to ED or call 000 if

  • Chest pain, collapse, ongoing loss of consciousness — call 000
  • Symptoms of stroke (sudden weakness, facial droop, speech change) — call 000

Respiratory & ENT

Suitable for urgent care

  • Sore throat, tonsillitis, ear pain, sinusitis
  • Cough and chest infections in stable patients
  • Mild to moderate asthma flare-ups responsive to reliever
  • Nose bleeds that have stopped or are settling

Go to ED or call 000 if

  • Severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, unable to speak in sentences — call 000
  • Severe asthma not responding to reliever — call 000 or go to ED
  • Uncontrolled bleeding — call 000 or go to ED

Gastrointestinal

Suitable for urgent care

  • Vomiting and diarrhoea with mild to moderate dehydration
  • Abdominal pain assessment for common causes
  • Reflux, gastritis flares, short-term nausea

  • Severe abdominal pain with rigidity, blood in vomit, black stools — go to ED
  • Suspected appendicitis, bowel obstruction, or pregnancy pain — go to ED

Skin & soft tissue

Suitable for urgent care

  • Cellulitis assessment and antibiotic start
  • Abscess review, minor wound infection
  • Rashes, hives, mild allergic reactions
  • Insect bites and stings without airway involvement

Go to ED or call 000 if

  • Anaphylaxis, airway swelling, wheeze after allergen — use adrenaline and call 000
  • Rapidly spreading redness with fever or severe pain — go to ED

Urinary & sexual health

Suitable for urgent care

  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • STI testing and treatment initiation
  • Emergency contraception, contraceptive advice

Go to ED or call 000 if

  • Fever with back/flank pain, vomiting or unwell (suspected pyelonephritis) may need hospital care
  • Testicular pain of sudden onset — go to ED urgently

Neurology & headache

Suitable for urgent care

  • Known migraine flare needing acute treatment
  • Tension-type headache assessment
  • Mild dizziness in a well patient

  • Sudden severe worst-ever headache (thunderclap) — call 000
  • Headache with fever, neck stiffness, confusion or new weakness — call 000
  • Any signs of stroke — call 000

Musculoskeletal & injury

Suitable for urgent care

  • Sprains, strains, soft-tissue injuries
  • Suspected minor fractures needing referral for imaging and splinting
  • Back and neck pain without red flags

  • Suspected open fracture, obvious deformity, loss of pulse or sensation — go to ED
  • High-impact trauma, head injury with vomiting or drowsiness — call 000

Wounds & procedures

Suitable for urgent care

  • Wound cleaning, closure with sutures, glue or clips where suitable
  • Dressings, burns first aid, foreign body assessment
  • Simple splinting for suspected minor fractures

Go to ED or call 000 if

  • Deep or heavily contaminated wounds needing operating theatre — go to ED
  • Severe burns, chemical or electrical burns — call 000 or go to ED

Children & family

Suitable for urgent care

  • Fevers in older children who are alert and drinking
  • Ear infections, sore throats, common childhood rashes
  • Minor injuries and cuts

Go to ED or call 000 if

  • Any unwell infant with ongoing fever or poor feeding — go to ED
  • Drowsiness, floppy, seizure or trouble breathing in a child — call 000
