IV fluids & dehydration clinic
Clinical assessment and IV rehydration for gastro, vomiting, migraine dehydration and heat illness — for patients who are unable to keep fluids down but are otherwise stable.
Quick answer
IV fluids are a medical treatment, not a wellness drip. We assess you first — history, examination and observations — then decide together whether IV rehydration is the right treatment for your presentation.
Common reasons for IV rehydration
- Gastroenteritis with persistent vomiting
- Hyperemesis-type nausea in early pregnancy (with appropriate referral)
- Migraine attacks with vomiting and dehydration
- Heat illness or exertional dehydration in stable patients
When to go to hospital instead
- Severe dehydration with confusion, very low blood pressure or minimal urine output — call 000 or go to ED
- Suspected bowel obstruction, acute severe abdominal pain, or blood in vomit or stool
- Infants and young children with ongoing fever, poor feeding or reduced wet nappies
