IV pathway
IV antibiotics in Springfield
For selected infections where oral antibiotics alone aren't enough, our urgent-care team can start an outpatient IV antibiotic pathway with in-clinic monitoring.
Quick answer
IV antibiotics are used when a person needs faster or higher tissue antibiotic levels than oral treatment can give — but is stable enough to be managed in an urgent care clinic rather than admitted to hospital.
When IV antibiotics may be appropriate
- Selected cellulitis and soft-tissue infections not settling on oral treatment
- Some urinary tract infections with systemic features in stable patients
- Continuation of a hospital-initiated IV plan under clear instructions
Every case is reviewed individually. If IV therapy is not suitable — or you may need admission — we will arrange safe transfer or referral.
How the visit works
Assessment
Clinical review, observations and a plan for treatment or referral.
Cannulation & dose
IV access, dose administration and in-clinic monitoring for reactions.
Follow-up
Return-for-review plan, or switch to oral therapy once you're improving.
Safety notes
- Severe sepsis, unstable observations, or airway/breathing compromise are not suitable for outpatient IV — call 000 or go to ED.
- Allergies must be disclosed before treatment.
- Some IV antibiotics require pathology or imaging that may be arranged externally.
